It may be covered in the grey road film that builds up over wet miles, or it may have concentrated oil, grease and workshop grime around specific areas. Choosing between traffic film remover vs degreaser comes down to recognising that difference before reaching for the sprayer.

Both products are built to cut through stubborn contamination, and both can have a place in a professional wash routine. They are not, however, interchangeable. Use the wrong one across the whole vehicle and you may waste product, make rinsing harder or apply more cleaning strength than the job needs.

What is traffic film remover?

Traffic film remover, often shortened to TFR, is an exterior pre-wash cleaner designed to remove the dull layer of dirt that clings to vehicles in everyday use. That film is rarely just mud. It is a mixture of road dust, diesel residue, salt, moisture, soot, oily deposits and fine particles from other road users.

It is particularly useful on white vans, fleet cars, taxis, lorries and daily drivers that cover regular mileage. The contamination often shows most clearly along lower doors, rear panels, bumpers, sills and the back of the vehicle, but a properly diluted TFR can be applied across the exterior as part of a routine wash.

Most traffic film removers are alkaline cleaners. They work by breaking the bond between grime and the painted surface, allowing pressure washer water to carry contamination away. A good TFR saves time at the contact-wash stage because it removes much of the heavy soil before a wash mitt or brush touches the paintwork.

The key word is dilution. A stronger mix may be needed for a heavily soiled commercial vehicle, while a lightly used car with good protection will usually need a milder solution. Product instructions should always set the starting point, then the ratio can be adjusted according to soil level, water quality and application method.

What is a degreaser used for?

A degreaser is made for concentrated oily contamination. Think engine bay residue, leaked oil, greasy door shuts, workshop floors, machinery, fuel stains, heavily soiled wheel arches and the grime found around hinges and mechanical components.

Where TFR handles the broad layer of road dirt, degreaser targets the sticky, water-resistant build-up that ordinary wash products struggle to shift. It is often the better choice when dirt feels slick rather than dusty, or when it has collected in one specific area instead of covering the complete vehicle.

Degreasers also vary considerably. Some are water-based and suitable for a wide range of automotive and industrial jobs. Others are much stronger, more targeted products intended for hard surfaces, workshop use or serious cleaning work. That is why reading the label matters more with degreasers than with almost any other cleaning chemical.

A powerful degreaser can be extremely effective, but it is not automatically the best pre-wash for painted panels. Used too strongly or left to dry, it may affect waxes, sealants and dressings. On sensitive finishes, polished aluminium, uncoated metal or delicate plastic trim, compatibility should be checked before full application.

The simplest distinction is coverage versus concentration. Traffic film remover is generally the right tool for cleaning widespread road grime from a vehicle exterior. Degreaser is generally the right tool for a localised problem involving oil, grease or heavy workshop contamination.

For example, a dealership preparing a used vehicle may apply TFR to the bodywork, wheel arches and lower panels before pressure washing. If the engine bay has old oil staining around the filler cap or greasy grime around the bonnet latch, a degreaser can be applied carefully to those areas separately.

A valeter dealing with a builder's van may need both. TFR can remove the general film from paintwork and rear doors, while degreaser deals with oily handprints, residue around equipment storage areas and grime on the step. This approach is more efficient than applying a high-strength degreaser over every panel.

The difference also affects finish quality. A vehicle cleaned with the appropriate pre-wash is easier to shampoo safely, easier to dry and less likely to retain grey staining in panel gaps. It also helps protect the time spent on later stages such as tyre dressing, glass cleaning and paint protection.

When to choose TFR

Choose traffic film remover when the vehicle has routine exterior contamination from the road. It is the practical option for regular maintenance washes, busy valeting bays and commercial fleets where speed and consistent results matter.

TFR is especially useful after wet weather, winter driving and motorway mileage. Road salt and dirty spray can build up quickly on lower bodywork, and allowing it to sit for weeks is not good practice for paintwork, wheels or exposed underbody areas.

Apply it to a cool vehicle where possible, working from the lower panels upwards if the product guidance recommends it. Give it enough contact time to work, but never allow it to dry. Rinse thoroughly with a pressure washer before moving on to shampoo or foam. On protected vehicles, use the mildest effective dilution to avoid unnecessarily shortening the life of wax or sealant protection.

When a degreaser is the better choice

Use degreaser when there is visible oil, grease or stubborn residue that remains after a normal pre-wash. Engine bays, wheel arches, door hinges, fuel flaps, chassis components and workshop surfaces are common examples.

For vehicle detailing, controlled application is usually best. Spray the product onto the affected area rather than soaking the complete vehicle, agitate only where safe with an appropriate brush, then rinse fully. Keep water away from sensitive electrical areas and avoid flooding connectors, air intakes or damaged wiring in an engine bay.

On wheels, a degreaser may help with oily grime behind the spokes or within arches, but it is not a replacement for a dedicated wheel cleaner where brake dust is the main issue. Brake dust contains metallic contamination that may need a product designed specifically to loosen it. Matching the cleaner to the contamination gives better results and avoids unnecessary chemical use.

How to use both products without damaging the finish

Good results come from process as much as product choice. Start by assessing the vehicle in dry light. If the dirt is a uniform grey or brown film, begin with TFR. If there are dark, sticky patches or oil staining, reserve degreaser for those areas.

Always work on cool surfaces and avoid direct sun where possible. Heat speeds up evaporation, reducing dwell time and increasing the risk of staining. Pre-rinse heavy mud first, then apply the chosen chemical at the correct dilution. Do not guess dilution ratios, particularly in a busy car wash or fleet operation where overuse quickly raises costs.

Use clean equipment. A sprayer used for degreaser should be clearly identified and maintained, rather than being shared casually with shampoo, snow foam or dressings. Chemical-resistant bottles, trigger heads and pressure washer systems help keep application consistent and reduce waste.

After rinsing, inspect the vehicle before contact washing. If road film has lifted but a few greasy areas remain, spot-treat them instead of repeating the entire pre-wash. This saves time and is kinder to protective coatings. Once the surface is clean, continue with a pH-appropriate shampoo and dry using clean towels or an air dryer.

Personal protection matters too. Wear suitable gloves, avoid breathing spray mist and use eye protection when working with concentrates or overhead surfaces. In a trade setting, safe storage, labelled containers and staff training are part of delivering a reliable service, not an optional extra.

Can traffic film remover replace a degreaser?

Sometimes, but not always. A strong TFR can shift light oily grime, particularly on road-facing areas such as lower panels and arches. It is often enough for a routine maintenance wash. Once oil is baked on, thick around mechanical components or mixed with workshop dirt, a targeted degreaser will usually do the job faster.

The reverse is less advisable. Degreaser may remove traffic film, but using it as your default whole-car pre-wash can be excessive. It may strip protection more quickly, increase product consumption and create more work when rinsing.

The best choice for your wash routine

For most regular vehicle cleaning, keep traffic film remover as the main pre-wash product and use a degreaser as a problem-solver for oily, heavy-duty areas. That setup suits a home detailer maintaining one car just as well as it suits a valeting business turning around several vehicles a day.
