Start with the vehicles you actually wash, the level of finish expected and the number of jobs that need completing each day. Then choose equipment and chemicals that support that workflow.

Plan the Wash Bay Around Vehicle Flow

Before buying a pressure washer or fitting a canopy, map the route each vehicle takes. It should enter cleanly, be washed without blocking the next job and leave without carrying dirty water into your finishing area. Where space allows, separate the wet wash stage from drying, vacuuming and final checks. This prevents water spotting and cross-contamination while keeping staff moving rather than waiting.

Allow enough room around the largest vehicle you service. A bay that feels adequate for cars can become impractical when a long-wheelbase van or rigid lorry arrives. Operators need safe access to wheel arches, rooflines and rear doors, with hoses positioned so they do not have to be dragged repeatedly across the working area.

Drainage Is the Part You Cannot Treat as an Afterthought

Wash water carries traffic film, oil, fuel residue, brake dust, road salt and chemical solution. Letting that water run into the wrong drain can create environmental, legal and costly operational issues. Your wash area should be designed with a properly graded floor that directs water to the correct drainage system.

In many commercial settings, wash water will require controlled disposal through an approved system, commonly involving silt management and an oil separator or interceptor where appropriate. The exact requirements depend on your site, drainage connection and local water authority rules. Check the position before installation, especially if you are changing an existing forecourt, workshop or yard into a wash area.

Hot-water pressure washers come into their own on heavily soiled fleet vehicles, oily plant and winter road grime, but they carry a higher purchase and running cost. If vehicles are washed occasionally and are not heavily contaminated, that extra investment may not pay back.

Fit practical hose management from day one. Wall-mounted reels or overhead booms reduce trip hazards, protect hoses from vehicle tyres and make the bay faster to use. The same applies to foam equipment, sprayers and vacuum hoses. A tidy bay is not just easier to work in - it protects equipment and presents a better standard to customers.

Essential Working Tools

Most commercial bays need more than a pressure washer and a bucket. A workable setup normally includes a chemical-resistant sprayer or foam applicator, wash brushes suited to vehicle type, wheel brushes, microfibre wash media, drying towels or a vehicle dryer, and a wet-and-dry vacuum for interiors where valeting is part of the service.

Build a Chemical Process, Not a Random Shelf

Track how much product is used per vehicle type, how long each wash takes and where staff regularly lose time. Review the finish too. Streaks, missed wheel faces, water spots and poor tyre appearance are often signs that the process is rushed or the product sequence is wrong.
